The Nicest Place on the Internet

I actually remember hearing about this ages ago, but I forget who pointed me to it, so thanks to Brit Morin for bringing it back to my attention. The concept is simple: need a hug? Go get one from the internet. You can even upload your own hugs to share with family (or the internet) and make a playlist of your favorites.

Calming Manatee

calmingmanateelovesyou
It’s no secret that Manatees are my spirit animal and patronus all in one. Fun Fact: for a social studies fair in fourth grade, I made art of a manatee out of yarn and lentils. I’m not even kidding. Man, I wish I still had it. Add to that, the site runners at Calming Manatee add image descriptions (for those using screen readers) and credit the sources and I love them even more. Plus, who can’t use a Manatee pick me up some days. If you want just a randomized bit of Calming Manatee, you can also check out CalmingManatee.com.

This week, a tumblr-inspired list of things I found wonderful: an article on cosplaying while black, best Tweets of the Super Bowl Blackout, the best new tumblr ever, and some edgy Etsy-ness.

I’m a Black Cosplayer and Some People Hate It (xoJane.com)

“My Venus became the unintentional face of the cosplay race debate online, an unwitting example of “Black cosplayers doing it right,” as if 9 times out of 10, black cosplayers were doing it wrong by default.”

I have a group of friends that love cosplaying for various conventions and their effort and commitment to their vision is incredible. So is Chaka Cumberbatch’s… she just happens to be black, and in being so, gets a ridiculous amount of criticism for her cosplay choices. This article is a great read for anyone who sits behind the safety of their computer screen and bashes the hard work that cosplayers of all sizes and colors put into their work. As with almost all online articles, don’t venture into the comments.

Pretentious Food

(Cue SNL Stefon voice) Tumblr’s hottest new tumble blog is Pretentious Food. Which, sadly, actually only made five posts in 2010 and only now found its way to me. Those five posts are still delightful, though. Who knew that when you describe it as “Sweet legume salsa, finely chopped and whipped until creamy. Pairs well with seasonal fruit compote and 9-grain house-baked bread” Jif sounds so classy. Here’s hoping this culinary genius starts back up again.

The Funniest Tweets of the Super Bowl Blackout (Buzzfeed)

These two were my favorites, but the rest are gems, as well.

Etsy Find of the Week: What the BLEEP – “Shit” letterpress stationery

etsy concretelace

I love the juxtaposition of the harsh language and pretty, twirly lettering. This (along with its mates: “Damn” and “Fuck” stationary) would be perfect consolation cards for a certain group of friends in my life. For those with more high brow tastes than mine, there are a variety of other delightful and beautiful letterpress cards at ConcreteLace for you to peruse.

Just a couple of quick apps that I’ve been loving this week, as I have been SWAMPED!

Oflow Creativity App (http://oflowapp.com/)

Screenshots of the Oflow Creativity App

Need some creative inspiration? With the Oflow app, just pull it up on your phone or iPad and get one of over 100 random creativity tips, suggestions, and inspirations. Such a simple idea, but such a brilliant one, as well.

Vine (http://vine.co/)

I probably don’t need to tell you about Vine, Twitter’s newest product, and the biggest app sensation since Instagram. An easy to use app for making six second, looping videos, Vine is the best thing to happen to moving pictures since the gif. You can check out my Elphie clip, and hopefully, I’ll have more interesting things to video soon. Until then, Co.create compiled a great list of the most creative uses of Vine so far.

This week on the Wonderful: a new take on an old song, a celebration, and a cozy shirt.

REM’s “Losing My Religion” – Major Scaled

Instantly recognizable, yet completely changed. Such a neat rendering of this song and from only changing the minor chords to major ones. Amazing.

Obama’s 2nd Inaugural

There was a lot of wonderful surrounding the inauguration on Sunday and Monday, and this Time Roundup covers a lot of what I enjoyed. The Buzzfeed article 23 Reasons Sasha and Malia Stole the Inauguration covers the rest.

Etsy Find of the Week: Thumbhole Tubeshirt from brookthere

Organic Cotton Tubeshirt with thumbholes from brookthere on etsy

Shortly before Christmas, I fell in love with a ski jacket that had thumbholes (unfortunately, I couldn’t justify buying it) and for Christmas, one of my sisters-in-law got me a fantastic Sweaty Betty yoga shirt with thumbholes. I never knew how much I needed thumbholes in my life. I’ve always loved my long sleeved shirts and sweaters extra long armed, so adding thumbhole to keep it in place is the perfect cozy combination.

Wednesday Wonderful: Friday the 13th Edition

Wednesday Category

A special Friday edition of the Wednesday Wonderful because a) I missed Wednesday and b) it’s full of Florida goodness that I’ll miss. I imagine this won’t be the last Florida themed Wednesday Wonderful before I move.

CAPow – Florida Typography Print

This print is going on my list of things that will decorate our new Bay Area apartment. Love the way the typography is used… just have to figure out what color combination to pick. Other states (and other cool prints) are available at CAPow’s etsy shop. The Hometown Hearts series is pretty cool, too.

delovelyArts – Florida Custom Heart the Spot

delovelyArts - Florida Custom Heart the Spot

Growing up in Florida, obviously there are a lot of places that are special to me, but I would love to get this print to commemorate Micanopy, FL, where my husband and I got married at the historic Herlong Mansion. It’s sappy to say, but it really was one of the greatest days of my life: my family, my new family, our friends, all coming together. It was a great day that I never wanted to end. If the person did other countries, I’d love to have one of a heart over Edinburgh, too, where we shared our first kiss.

I saw this artist’s work at the Indie Gainesville Art Fest last fall and can personally vouch for how lovely they are to work with and how quality their prints are. After my brother and his family made the move out to CA last fall, I got them a set of prints for Christmas and had them framed. I definitely want to do the same when we make it out there.

SaveTheDate – Custom Address Stamp

And finally, looking forward, one thing I’ve been wanting to get forever is a custom address stamp. Even though I don’t send mail out often, I’d love to have one for Christmas card time (and maybe it would even encourage me to send more letters and cards). There are a ton of etsy shops providing these, but I really like the designs at SaveTheDate’s shop. Especially this one.
